Venus Williams In Australian Open Quarterfinals
01.24.2010 Melbourne-- Venus Williams overcame a slow start Monday (Sunday night USA) at the Australian Open to defeat the 17th
seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Venus turned in several errors behind some masterful slices from the Italian before regrouping
to take 12 of the last 14 games of the match after the American would reduce her number of errors dramatically.
In the quarterfinals, Venus takes on the 16th seeded Na Li of China. Li leads Venus head to head 1-0 after taking their only previous
encounter 7-5, 7-5 at the quarterfinals of the 2008 Olympics. Li was the more agressive and consistent in that match. Venus will need to turn the
tables on her Chinese opponent if she is to advance to the semifinals. A semifinal Melbourne finish for the American could mean a return to the top four
in the WTA Tour rankings after the tournament as Venus could move from number six to four.
Venus Williams In Australian Open 4th Round
01.23.2010 Melbourne-- Venus Williams Saturday (Friday night USA) defeated the Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 7-6(7-4) in the third round.
Venus is also playing doubles at Melbourne with her sister Serena Williams.
In the fourth round, Venus is set to take on the 17th seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Head to head Venus leads Schiavone 5-0. Venus
has only lost one set ever to the 18th ranked Italian and normally overpowers her. Should Venus win this match, she would then face a tougher
test in the quarterfinals as she could meet either the 16th seeded Na Li of China or the 4th seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Both Li and
Wozniacki possess very consistent groundstrokes which can trouble Venus.
