Venus Williams Finishes 2009 Ranked Sixth
12.29.2009 Los Angeles-- Venus Williams began 2009 with a fast start by taking early WTA Tour titles at Dubai and Acapulco. But
then Williams' often suspect fitness once again played a major role in the rest of her year as a major knee injury put an extreme
damper on much of the rest of the American's year. Williams would reach the finals at Wimbledon, Stanford and Doha but would not win
another singles title. The big serving American ended the year ranked number six.
Venus Williams Loses In Cincinnati Third Round
08.15.2009 Cincinnati-- Venus Williams Thursday in the third round at Cincinnati lost to her sometime nemisis, Flavia Pennetta of Italy
7-6, 6-2. Venus hit far too many errors to stay in many rallies with the steady Italian. The good news is Venus is scheduled to play again
in only a few days in Canada. Check out the Toronto draw.
Venus Williams Wins Stanford Doubles, Loses Singles
08.05.2009 Stanford-- Last week Venus Williams ripped through the Stanford draw in route to the final round without losing a set, before turning in
a performance littered with errors to lose in the final to the 8th seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Venus after losing the singles
final, took the doubles title with her sister Serena Williams.
Venus Williams Loses To Sister At Wimbledon
07.04.2009 London-- Possibly hindered by a sore knee, Venus Williams started alright but then her level of play dropped in the Wimbledon
singles final Saturday against her sister Serena Williams. Venus lost to Serena 7-6(7-3), 6-2.
Venus' first serve was missing for a large part of the match and she made some costly errors in the tiebreaker and then again to lose
serve to fall behind 2-4. That Serena was hitting aces at will did not help. Consolation for Venus is that she did win the doubles title with
Serena later in the day.
