Entry 2 - 10/28/97 Sydney Diary

Hey it's me. I am writing this at 9:20 pm on Tuesday, October 28, 1997. As usual I have waited to the last minute to do this, as I do with everything else, especially if its pressing. I always say I'll put off till tomorrow what I can do today.

Anyway, I just finished playing Elena Likhovtseva (I can't say her last name). I won 7-6 (3), 6-2. I lost serve twice. I HATE losing serve. It just makes me sick! I play Silvia Farina next. I have never played her before, but that's ok. I feel good.

I went to this V.I.P. dinner last night. They had this show going on, with singing and dancing. The singer guy had a voice like Louis Armstrong. He was pretty cool. Anyway, Arantxa was sitting at the table next to me, along with her mother and Louise Pleming, this funny Australian player. Well anyway, they were saying, "Venus, you want to sing, Venus you are going to sing, aren't you?" After about five minutes they were VERY SERIOUS. The tournament director was setting it up and before I knew it they were about to announce to the people dining that I was going to sing! I was like no, oh my God, WAIT! I was saying no. Then I said, "OK, maybe with my sister." They took that maybe as a yes and before I knew it they had the spotlight on my table and the music was starting. Now I am not a bad singer, I can hold a tune, but just to sing on the spur of the moment a song I did not know the words to? That's trama. I was about to have a stroke, because I had already had a heart attack. They chose the song by Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World". I know the chorus, but not the verses. I could not stop laughing and my voice had a high pitch because I was afraid to sing into the microphone. My mother saved me though. She has a great voice. She sang a lot of the song for me. After that Arantxa decided that we (me, Serena, Louise and herself) all should get on stage and do the Macarena. I agreed, because I LOVE to get down. Anyway I had to learn to do the Macarena before I got on stage. It was pretty fun. After that, Louise (who I believe had too much to drink) got up and started dancing with Arantxa's mom. Then they started to pull guys from the audience to dance with. Arantxa tried to set me up to dance with some guy but that was TOO much for me. I ended up not even eating dinner after all the stuff that happened.

Tomorrow we (all the players) have to go meet the Mayor of Moscow and then I will practice, then maybe I will go shopping (jewelry!). Anyway, Bye!
